Do fake owls keep pigeons away?
A plastic owl is easy to put on a balcony. Keeping pigeons wary of it is the harder part.
Why the first quiet morning can mislead you
A bird staying away once does not tell you what it will do next week. Weather, feeding elsewhere and your own presence can change the visits too. If you try a decoy, watch whether birds keep returning and how long they stay.
The problem is familiarity
Natural Resources Wales explains that birds can become accustomed to visual scare devices. Changing methods and combining them with other measures can help.
If you already own an owl
Try changing its position safely and track the visits. Keep food and nesting opportunities out of the picture. If pigeons sit close to it repeatedly, stop treating its presence as proof that the balcony is protected.
Change what makes the balcony worth visiting
Look at the landing spots and sheltered corners as well as the decoy. Our balcony pigeon guide covers the practical checks. If netting is unsuitable, see the options without netting.
Watch the pattern, not one departure
Use the same observation window on several days. Note landings, time spent and anything else you changed. A pigeon flying away is a useful observation; fewer repeat visits over time is the outcome you actually want.
